TEXAS TECH FACES OKLAHOMA STATE IN FIRST ROUND
Texas Tech (14-17) will try and build off its momentum of its victory over Texas, as the Red Raiders face Oklahoma State (20-11) in the first round of the 2014 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships. The two teams split the regular season, as Texas Tech upended then No. 19 Oklahoma State, 65-61, in Lubbock and the Cowboys topped the Red Raiders, 84-62, in Stillwater. The two are meeting in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament for the fourth time. The Cowboys have won all three previous first round meetings (2001, 2008 and 2012). In all, Oklahoma State is 5-1 against the Red Raiders in the Big 12 Championship. Texas Tech's only victory came in the quarterfinals of the 2002 edition of the tournament. Texas Tech is 8-7 all-time in first round games, including capturing a 71-69 victory over West Virginia in last season's first round. The Red Raiders are 1-1 in neutral site games this season, after splitting games in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y. Texas Tech will look to win multiple neutral site games for the first time since 2010, when the Red Raiders went 4-2. Red Raider head coach Tubby Smith is 35-16 all-time in conference postseason tournaments at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky and Minnesota, including 17-4 in his team's first game in the tournaments.
• Texas Tech is 4-13 against RPI Top 50 teams this year and 10-4 against everyone else (51 and above). The Red Raiders have faced the RPI Top 50 in 11 of the last 12 games.
• The Red Raiders have won six Big 12 games for the first time since 2007-08.
• With its win over then No. 25 Oklahoma, the Red Raiders have now defeated three USA Today Top 25 teams this season. The last time Texas Tech defeated three USA Today Top 25 teams in the season was during the 2007-08 season, when the Red Raiders topped No. 10 Texas A&M, 68-63, No. 22 Kansas State, 84-75, and No. 5 Texas, 83-80.
• Texas Tech is looking to win 15 games in a season for the first time since 2010 and just the second time in the last six years.
• Texas Tech's RPI of 114 and strength of schedule of 32 are the highest for the Red Raiders since finishing the 2009-10 season with an RPI of 66 and a strength of schedule of 17.
• Jaye Crockett moved past Ronald Ross into 24th on the all-time scoring list at Texas Tech and now has 1,212 points.
• Jordan Tolbert's 11 points against Texas give him exactly 1,000 career points, which is 37th all-time at Texas Tech.
TEXAS TECH AND THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Texas Tech will be making its 18th appearance in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championships. When the Red Raiders square off with Oklahoma State, it will mark the 31st game Texas Tech has played in at the event. The Red Raiders are 13-17 in the Big 12 Championship.
The Red Raiders have reached finals once (2005), the semifinals four times (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005) and the quarterfinals 10 times (1997, 2002-07, 2009, 2010, 2013). Texas Tech's game against Oklahoma will marked the 16th time the Red Raiders have played in the first round. The Red Raiders are 8-7 in first round games. The Red Raiders have faced quarterfinal opponent Kansas three times in the event with the Jayhawks winning all three matchups. Kansas topped Texas Tech in the 2002 semifinals, 90-50, in the 2010 quarterfinals, 80-68 and in the 2013 quarterfinals, 91-63.
RED RAIDERS IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS
Since 1976, Texas Tech has appeared in 37 conference tournaments in either the Southwest Conference (1976-96) or the Big 12 Conference (1997-2013). During that span, the Red Raiders have played in 77 games and reached the championship game seven times. Texas Tech is 43-34 in those games, winning five Southwest Conference Postseason Tournament Championships (1976, 1985, 1986, 1993 and 1996). Texas Tech was 30-17 in Southwest Conference tournament action and is 13-17 in Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship action.
RED RAIDERS RETURN EXPERIENCE
Nine of the current 13 players on the Red Raider roster have appeared in the Big 12 Championships.
Jaye Crockett will make is fourth appearances, including recording a double-double last season against Oklahoma State (12 points/11 rebounds) in 2012. In four tournament games, Crockett has averaged 9.5 points per game. Jordan Tolbert has averaged 13.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in three games, While Dejan Kravic has recorded 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in two tournament games.
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series, 41-14, and 9-2 in neutral site games. OSU has won and 11 of the last 14 in the series. Texas Tech snapped a six-game losing streak to Oklahoma State on Feb. 8. The previous last time Texas Tech defeated a ranked OSU squad was Feb. 24, 2003 in Stillwater, 62-57. Texas Tech will be looking for two wins over the Cowboys in the same season for the first time since 2002. Texas Tech will be looking for its first win over Oklahoma State in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship since March 8, 2002. The Red Raiders are 1-5 against the Cowboys in the Big 12 Championship.
Oklahoma State won four of its last five to close out the season with a 20-11 record. The Cowboys are the No. 8 seed to the Red Raiders' No. 9 seed. Oklahoma State is led by Marcus Smart, who is averaging 17.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.7 steals. He is joined in double figures by Markel Brown (17.2 ppg), Le'Bryan Nash (14.2 ppg) and Phil Forte (13.2 ppg).
Texas Tech is 1-5 in games decided by five points or less and 6-10 in games decided by 10 points or less. Texas Tech had gone 17-23 in games decided by 10 points or less over the previous three seasons. This season, Tech is 5-9 in league games decided by 10 points or less.
