LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball program has now had the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for three consecutive weeks after senior outfielder Adam Kirsch (Spring, Texas) was honored Monday, the league office announced this afternoon.
Kirsch becomes the ninth Red Raider to receive the honor and joins teammates Ryan Long (Feb. 24) and Chris Sadberry (Mar. 3) who were selected the two previous weeks. This is the third time since the award started in 2011 that Tech has received three newcomer awards in one season.
Also receiving top honors from the Big 12 are Oklahoma catcher Mac James (Player of the Week) and Baylor right-handed pitcher Josh Michalec (Pitcher of the Week) were also recognized.
Kirsch was a key run producer in the middle of Texas Tech’s lineup during a 5-0 record last week, which included a midweek win over New Mexico and a four-game series sweep over New Mexico State. Kirsch batted .412 (7-for-17) with three runs, three doubles, a home run, seven RBI, six walks, .542 on-base percentage and .765 slugging percentage.
He carried a 14-game hit streak through the weekend series up until the final game when he saw his streak snapped – giving him the longest hit streak by a Red Raider newcomer since 2004 (Cameron Blair – 20 games).
Kirsch racked up three multiple RBI games last week and notched a pair of multi-hit games, including going 3-for-4 with two RBI with a double and home run in Tech’s midweek win over the Lobos of New Mexico.
He had a pair of two RBI games against NMSU while going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in game two of the series and then finished out the series with two walks and a sacrifice fly in the game his hit streak came to an end going 0-for-2.
Kirsch is batting .375 (21-for-56) with 10 runs, eight doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI and nine walks with a .625 slugging percentage and .448 on-base percentage.
