LUBBOCK, Texas(Texas Tech Press Release) – For the third consecutive year, Texas Tech Lady Raider Tennis has won at least two of the nine position titles handed out by the Big 12 Conference.
The doubles tandems of Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde and Beatriz Machado Santos and Lynn Kiro have won their respective positions.
Sanders and Teltumbde, who went 7-2 in Big 12 play, won their second consecutive Big 12 position title at No. 2 doubles. In all, it is Teltumbde’s third straight after win No. 3 honors in 2012 with Elizabeth Ullathorne. Sanders and Teltumbde have gone 18-7 this year, including 16-4 at No. 2 doubles. Over the last two seasons, the duo is 42-16 and 33-10 at No. 2.
On March 21, Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty adjusted the doubles lineup for the fourth time in the dual match season, searching for the right combination. Petty found the solution when he teamed Machado Santos with Kiro. The freshmen duo reeled off eight straight victories, including a 7-0 mark in Big 12 play. Their efforts in league play earned the pair the Big 12 position title at No. 3 doubles. It is the third straight year the Lady Raiders have won the position with three different tandems.
Kiro went undefeated in Big 12 singles action, but did not qualify for a position title after going 5-0 at No. 3 and 4-0 at No. 4. The freshman is 28-6 and ranked No. 113 heading into the NCAA Championships.
Prior to 2012, Texas Tech had won just five position titles in 15 years in the Big 12. Over the last three years, Texas Tech has won 10 of a possible 27 position titles.
No. 26 Texas Tech will begin play in the 2014 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships on Friday in Los Angeles, when the Lady Raiders face No. 35 Ole Miss at noon CT at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
