LUBBOCK, Texas (March 8, 2014) – Levi Westerlund completed one of the best pitching performances in the history of Lubbock Christian University baseball with a complete game nine-inning one-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University to complete a Heartland Conference series sweep Saturday afternoon at Hays Field.

Westerlund, making his first start in his LCU career, needed only 84 pitches to complete the nine innings of work and faced two batters over the minimum. OPSU’s Samuel Moreno was the only Aggie to reach base and he reached twice. Moreno hit a single up the middle with two outs in the first inning and then reached on an error in the fourth inning. Westerlund did not allow a hit to the final 26 batters he faced and retired the final 17 he faced. He combined for 25 pitches over a four-inning stretch, needing only four pitches in the fifth inning, six in the sixth inning, 10 in the seventh inning and five pitches in the eighth inning.

Teammate Jarret Porter was the last Chaps pitcher to pitch a one-hit complete game shutout, and he completed the task in a seven inning game on Mar. 29, 2013 against Mid-America Christian.  Team records do not indicate if one-hitters thrown prior to the 2004 season were completed in nine innings games or not, but Westerlund’s one-hitter is the only one of nine innings on file through records going back since the 2004 season.

LCU scored all their runs in the second inning. Joel Lutz led off with a double to left-centerfield and eventually scored on a groundout hit into by Hunter McFall. Stephen Withrow would follow two batters later with a single to right field and right fielder Jacob Milburn’s throw in got away and the error allowed Brett Kauten to score for the 2-0 lead. OPSU starting pitcher Dylan Chavez also went the distance making his first collegiate start. He allowed one earned run off six hits in eight innings pitched, and fell to 1-2 on the season.

Lutz was the game’s only multi-hit performer, going 2-for-4 from the plate. Westerlund claimed the win for his first decision of the season (1-0) and his first career win at LCU.

The Chaparrals improved to 6-0 at home in conference games and are 8-1 in Heartland Conference action this season. They are 14-7 overall and have won five straight games. OPSU fell to 5-16 overall and 0-8 in conference action. LCU plays their next six games on the road beginning Friday at St. Edward’s University in a Heartland Conference series.
