The rights to Les Miserables are only available until January and Gerald Dolter, Lubbock Moonlight Musicals Director, said he knew he had to do this show while he could and after seeing David Gaschen perform in Phantom of the Opera he had his Jean Val Jean.
"I said 'You're incredible at this but I think your role is going to be Jean Val Jean' and he said 'You know I want to do it someday'...well low and behold it became available and I asked him and he said yes! We lucked out he said yes."
Gaschen is a Lubbock native who has traveled for shows but likes to get back to his roots.
"I was blessed to have the opportunity to somehow get back so I want to show how much I appreciate what Lubbock meant to me."
The Les Miserables movie was a box office hit last Christmas sparking peoples interest in the musical but Golter said Les Miserables was meant for the stage.
"As far as the grandeur of the piece, yeah you can see that in the movie and they can do a lot of CG stuff, but I think that Les Miz belongs in the theater."
Les Miserables tells the story of France on the brink of revolution, much of the story is dark but Gaschen says he wanted the role of Val Jean because of the bigger message.
"It's a wonderful ensemble show and it tells a wonderful story of grace. Of what it means to except Gods grace and what it means to move on once you've finally accepted Gods grace so that's why I really love to do this role."
Even if you don't usually got to the theater Golter said this is one show you don't want to miss.
"Come. Just get ready because you're just gonna fly when you see this show. We're just gonna take you away and the voices that you'll hear they're going to send you away."
Les Miserables had 4 showings. One each night this Thursday through Saturday all beginning at 7:30 pm and one show Sunday beginning at 2 pm at the Civic Center's theater.
