LEVELLAND, TX -- According to a report last week in the Levelland and Hockley County News-Press, the Levelland Economic Development Corporation provided a $500,000 loan to the West Texas & Lubbock Railway.  The money will be used for rail line improvements

The News-Press quoted LEDC Executive Director Shawn Kirkpatrick as saying, “The railroad and the EDC have identified a public safety issue.”

Specifically, that issue was was a five-mile stretch in Hockley County.  The News-Press reported that the improvements will allow WTLC to increase its speed to 10 miles per hour and transport an unlimited number of hazardous material rail cars instead of five at a time.  The improvement means fewer round trips with hazardous materials.
