Dr. Katherine Hayhoe, a Texas Tech climate scientist and 2014 TIME 100 Most Influential People, served as a lead author on the report. She said climate change is happening throughout the United States. Dr. Hayhoe says climate change isn't a future issue; we are experiencing its impact today.
The report warns the nation to be prepared for for more extreme weather. And, Hayhoe also warned that the choices we make now will determine the severity of its impact on the future.
She said in the Great Plains, rising temperatures are already increasing demand for water, and future increases and shifts in precipitation patterns will constrain development, natural resources, agriculture and more.
Around the United States as a whole, Hayhoe told us it is affecting things like our health, natural environment, and economy.
The study recommends the United States change the way it uses energy, cut carbon pollution and build infrastructure to withstand the impacts of climate change.
