LUBBOCK, TX -- Former Representative and current candidate for District 28 State Senator Delwin Jones was hospitalized Saturday at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. At first Covenant confirmed that Jones, 90, was in serious condition.  On Sunday evening Covenant provided an update Jones was in critical condition.  A spokesperson for Covenant was not allowed to disclose more information because of medical privacy laws.

Jones announced his candidacy for District 28 in late July and joined a field of six total candidates.

Jones was asked about his age and his health at the time of his announcement and said, “I come in each night and I’ve still got enough energy to work until 9:00 or 10:00 o’clock on a campaign. So, I’ve been blessed with good health and I’m proud of it.”

Friends, family members and competitors describe Jones as a fighter. "If he's able to get through this, which is not looking so good right now," Don Enger, relative of Jones said, "he will be right back out there campaigning and asking everybody to pass out his emery boards."

The Lubbock County Elections Office said that regardless of what happens, Delwin Jones' name will remain on the ballot for the September 9th special election.

Jones was a Lubbock State Representative from 1964 through 1972 and again from 1988 through 2011.
