LUBBOCK, TX -- The final harvest numbers for Lubbock’s biggest cash crop show that the greater Lubbock area produced 2.44 million bales of cotton in 2013. That’s down from 2.93 bales in 2012 according to Lubbock-based Plains Cotton Growers.

“Statewide production was down 17 percent,” PCG said. That’s roughly the same decrease in production for the 41 counties served by PCG. The record high was set in 2005 at 5.626 million bales.

“The abandonment rate from initial plantings in 2013 was 55 percent, and 44 percent in 2012,” PCG said. “In 2011 … the abandonment rate hit a record high at 66 percent.”

Floyd and Crosby Counties were the top two cotton producing counties in the greater Lubbock area.
