Lubbock, Surrounding Counties Declared Disaster Areas

Lubbock and all of the South Plains except for Borden County are designated, but Borden is still a contiguous county.
LUBBOCK, TX -- On Wednesday (January 15) the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated 252 counties nationwide as disaster areas. The reason was ongoing drought. The designation also includes 177 counties that are contiguous to the 252. Lubbock and all of the South Plains except for Borden County are designated, but Borden is still a contiguous county.

The declaration means farmers can apply for low interest disaster loans. Lubbock was more than six inches below normal for rainfall in 2013. The National Weather Service’s 90-day precipitation outlook for Lubbock shows a below normal probability for rainfall.
