LUBBOCK,TX— The Lubbock VFW needs help right now. Their members are getting older and that makes the logistics of getting them altogether harder.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States(VFW) is a non-profit organization created in 1914 to provide financial and emotional support to veterans.
The Lubbock branch, like most others is focused on local veterans and giving back to the community. In fact, Amos Hastings, the Post Adjutant, says giving back to the community is their main goal.
“That’s our whole being.” The 70-year-old said. “We're here to support and do as many things as we can to get the word out that our services aren't just important to the veterans, but they’re also important to the community.”
But currently, the Lubbock VFW post is asking for help. Their members are aging and many are unable to attend meetings any longer.
“We've got a lot of folks that are in their late 70's 80's early 90's. “ Hasting said. ”They're lifers at the VFW, but they can't come because one- they're disabled, two-they don't drive at night or three- they just don't drive at all.”
The solution is a van. The post is seeking funding or donations to help them attain a van to drive members around.
“I think that's our big driver right now,” Hasting said, “To either come up with enough funding, or get a van. That way we can go out and get these people more involved.”
The VFW does have fundraisers that bring in money, but almost all of their funds go to paying bills or community outreach. Thus far, they have been unable to raise the funds necessary to purchase a van outright.
The Lubbock VFW accepts donations either in person or via mail at their main location:
501 114th Street
Lubbock, Texas 79404
Or you can participate in their upcoming fundraisers like their weekly “Hamburger Wednesdays” where they make and sell hamburgers to raise money.
On September 12th, the VFW will host a fish fry fundraiser as well. Tickets are $10 for an adult and $5 for children.
Both the events listed above are open to the public.
