The Lubbock Police SWAT Team was called out to the 2000 block of 63rd Street during the noon hour. Officers confronted a man with a machete and a large kitchen knife, and ordered him to drop them.
“Officers tried to convince him to put the knives down and come out,” said Sergeant Jason Lewis. “The man charged [toward officers] with the knives.”
Officers tried to use non-lethal force – specifically a bean bag gun.
He continued to charge at them, regardless of negotiation tactics, forcing officers to shoot.
The man was taken by EMS with life-threatening injuries and died late Wednesday afternoon.
On Wednesday May 7, 2014 at 11:19 am police responded to a domestic disturbance at 2022 63rd Street. Officers were confronted by a suspect holding a machete and large kitchen knife. Hostage negotiators and special weapons and tactics officers responded to assist. During the negotiation the suspect charged officers with the weapons. Swat deployed less lethal force striking the suspect, however lethal force had to be used when the suspect continued charging. The suspect was taken to University Medical Center by EMS with life threatening injuries. The suspect has been pronounced deceased at University Medical Center.
