Each winter Meals on Wheels adds a food box onto their regular delivery to prepare seniors and the home bound for a time when meals can't be delivered said Meals on Wheels Assistant Director, Lisa Gilliland.
"We will be partnering with the South Plains food bank and we will be sending out about 420 senior food boxes to our recipients to our recipients that need a little extra food over the holidays."
Gilliland said all the food items can last throughout the winter.
"The food box we get from the food bank is going to be a fairly large sized box and it will have a variety of canned goods, dried goods, all kinds of preparable foods that they can just keep on their shelves and use as they need them."
Recipients will also get the classic holiday meal.
"Close to the Christmas holiday, the day before we're closed for the holiday, they will get their traditional hot Christmas dinner which will be the turkey, and dressing, roll, and all the side dishes."
Meals on Wheels also give out small presents during their 12 Days of Christmas.
"It is the 12 business days prior to the Christmas holiday. All of our recipients will receive different special treats. Today was popcorn day, yesterday the received a soft drink...all of the items were collected and donated by various individuals, groups, and civic clubs throughout the community."
"For a lot of our homebound clients, they're not getting out and going to Christmas parties. They're not going out and seeing the lights. So this way it gives them a holiday season and something to look forward to each of the days leading up the the Christmas holiday."
