As a true freshman last season Justis Nelson let his play do the talking making his first career start against the then No. 4 Baylor Bears. It was a baptism by fire but now in his second season, his confidence is at an all time high.
Although he only appeared in 5 games last season, with only 3 being starts, the intangible skills he possesses did not go unnoticed by former Texas Tech Defensive Backs Coach, John Lovett.
At this point last year Nelson's role was uncertain, but he took advantage of the chance to earn playing time when the opportunity presented itself.
Now with one season under his belt, Nelson will move from field to boundary corner and take on more responsibility.
"That's the big thing that I learned from last season to this season, you know just getting thrown in their against Baylor, you know great teams, OSU, confidence is what I took from all that," Texas Tech Cornerback, Justis Nelson said. "I got a text from one of the old coaching staff members, because he's in the NFL now and he's the one that recruited me and he had just played the seahawks that week and he said my length and stuff really reminded him of Richard Sherman."
"I think the big thing with Justis this season, I mean this off-season has been his confidence, he's playing like he's an older guy, he's not playing like a sophomore," Texas Tech Defensive Lineman, Branden Jackson said. "He's playing like he's ready to get up out of here, like he wants to make some money."
"I'm trying to get him to talk a little bit more, to bark a little bit more, not saying he's frail out there but I just need him to be real vocal," Texas Tech Linebacker, Sam Eguavoen said. "I want nasty corners, I want cocky corners."
"He playing that leader role, you know what I'm sayin, we were out there in seven on seven, I see him coaching up the freshmen, you know what I'm sayin, let 'em know how the game gonna go and what to do, and I told him you keep doing that, you know what I'm sayin, you are going to be playing a long time," Texas Tech Linebacker, Pete Robertson said.
