Newborn Baby Found in Dumpster, Police Arrest Mom

Dalhart Police said someone found a newborn baby boy in a residential garbage dumpster. The child was in critical condition, police said.
DALHART, TX -- Dalhart Police said someone found a newborn baby boy in a residential garbage dumpster around 9:00 pm Saturday.  Officials said baby “Brook” was in critical condition when they found him and as of noon Monday his condition has not changed.

Police believe the child to have been in the dumpster 5 to 6 hours. The child was taken to Northwest Hospital.

Police arrested the mother, Shonnie Smalley, 21, on Sunday morning and she remained in the Dallam/Hartley County Jail on a first-degree felony charge of injury of a child. Her bond was set at $50,000. Officials said if the child dies Smalley could be charged with murder.

The First Baptist Church in Dalhart is coordinating an effort to help the child.  The number to the church is 806-244-5584.
