One Person Dead in Lubbock Shooting, Police Arrest Suspect

A man died shortly after a shooting late Wednesday night in East Lubbock. <span style="color: #ff0000;">UPDATED</span> for police statement. <span style="color: #ff0000;">911 Audio</span> added 4/24/14 3:14 pm.
Lubbock, TX--  Lubbock Police said Wednesday night a man suffered life-threatening injuries after a shooting in East Lubbock.  A few hours later police said he died.

The victim was taken from 
the 2600 block of Ivory to University Medical Center in a private vehicle about 8:45 p.m.  

Thursday morning police arrested 56-year-old Leroy Mitchell of Lubbock in connection with the fatal shooting at the 2600 block of Ivory Avenue.
Police issued the following statement on Thursday afternoon:

On April 23, 2014 at 8:40 pm police responded to a shooting at 2600 Ivory. During an argument that was occurring between Leroy Mitchell and other individuals Victor Hopkins intervened in an attempt to defuse the situation. While attempting to calm the situation Victor Hopkins was shot in the chest by Leroy Mitchell. Mitchell fled on foot and Hopkins was transported to UMC by private vehicle. Hopkins was pronounced deceased a short time later at University Medical Center. Detectives worked quickly securing a murder warrant and tracking down Mitchell in the 1800 block of East 2nd Street where he was arrested without incident.
