Police Charge Man With False Report After Kidnapping Call

Police responded in force to the report of a kidnapped child. The report was false, and a man was arrested for sending police on a frivolous search.
LUBBOCK, TX (PRESS RELEASE) -- On March 11, 2014 at 2:26 pm a red 2007 Saturn Ion was stolen from 6501 University K-Mart. The owner of the vehicle told police that his six year old daughter was in the front seat when the vehicle was stolen. Officers immediately began tracking the vehicle and closing in on its location. Juvenile Detectives, Special Duty, Burglary Suppression, Swat Units, Traffic Squad, K-9, DPS Helicopter, and numerous officers from first and second shift all responded to the call. The vehicle was quickly located at 2:40 pm in the alley of 7800 Ave U.

The child and suspect were not in the vehicle when it was located; officers began a door to door search. The owner of the vehicle, Preston Washington, began giving conflicting information about the child. Officers were able to locate the child whom had been reported as kidnapped and other children related to Preston Washington.

Detectives arrested Washington after verifying the false report. The suspect who stole the vehicle was not located.
