Police Standoff Along Busy Highway Ends in Suicide

A two-hour standoff along a busy stretch of highway in Armstrong County ended when, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Michael Reynard Ezell Jr., 40, of Desoto took his own life.
WASHBURN, TX – A two-hour standoff along a busy stretch of highway in Armstrong County ended when, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Michael Reynard Ezell Jr., 40, of Desoto took his own life.

DPS said an Armstrong County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over a vehicle along US 287 near FM 2373 “to conduct a routine traffic stop.”

The deputy saw that Ezell had a gun called for backup which prompted help from DPS. Ezell refused to come out of the car. An official statement said, “As officers approached the vehicle, they found the driver deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.”

According to amarillo.com traffic was backed up for miles in both directions.

DPS said “Texas Rangers are currently investigating the incident.”
