LUBBOCK, Texas (Texas Tech Press Release) – A record five Texas Tech women’s tennis players have been named to the All-Big 12 squad announced on Tuesday by league officials.
The five honorees – Samantha Adams, Kenna Kilgo, Lynn Kiro, Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde – marks the first time since 2008 that one league schools has landed five different players on the All-Big 12 squads. It is just the fourth time in league history that once school has landed five players on the two squads, joining Kansas (1998), Texas (1999) and Baylor (2008).
Freshman sensation Lynn Kiro earned All-Big 12 Singles honors after running her record to 28-6 overall and 9-0 in Big 12 play. Kiro’s selection marks the fourth straight year Texas Tech has landed a player on the league singles lineup.
Kiro, who is riding a 15-match winning streak, is currently ranked No. 113 nationally. Her selection marks the 11th time a Lady Raider has earned All-Big 12 Singles honors. She is the first freshman to win the award since Zana Zlebnik in 1998.
Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo picked up their third straight All-Big 12 Doubles honor, while Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde teamed for their first honor.
Adams and Kilgo have ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation since becoming a tandem three seasons ago. The duo is 20-10 on the season and 12-8 in dual matches. It marks the third straight 20-win season for the All-Texan combo. Adams and Kilgo are 68-28 over the last three seasons. They earned All-Big 12 Doubles honors in 2012 and 2013.
For Adams, it is her fourth All-Big 12 Doubles honor after winning the award as a freshman with former Lady Raider Kelsy Gardner. She also All-Big 12 singles in 2012 and 2013, making her the most decorated player in school history.
Teltumbde and Sanders have become one of the most vaunted No. 2 doubles squads in the nation. Over the last two seasons, this tandem has been ranked as high as No. 33 nationally and gone 42-16 in doubles play. This season, Sanders and Teltumbde are 18-7 on the season and 16-4 at No. 2. The two Lady Raider teams on the All-Big 12 Doubles squad is a first for the program. It is also the first time that two doubles squads from the same school have made All-Big 12 since Baylor landed two squads on the 2009 edition of the team.
Soares and the Red Raiders will begin play in the 2014 NCAA Championships on Saturday, when the No. 41 Red Raiders face No. 17 California at the Mitchell Tennis Center at 9 a.m. It is the 13th all-time NCAA appearance for the Red Raiders in the Championships.
