WACO, Texas – No. 23 Texas Tech lost back-to-back games to the same opponent for the first time this season with a 2-1 loss at Baylor Saturday afternoon in game two of a three-game series at Baylor Ballpark.
The Red Raiders (15-5, 0-2 Big 12) cut Baylor’s lead to a run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single up the middle by senior third baseman Jake Barrios, but could never even the score as the Bears (10-8, 2-0 Big 12) claimed their first Big 12 series win of the season.
Junior left-handed pitcher Chris Sadberry (2-1) took his first loss of the season allowing seven hits (4 infield hits) and two runs with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Sadberry allowed his first walk of the season – snapping a streak of 26 consecutive innings pitched without allowing a walk.
Baylor starting left-handed pitcher Brad Kuntz (3-0) picked up the win throwing five innings allowing three hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Closer Josh Michalec notched his eighth save of the season, second of the weekend, pitching a scoreless ninth inning giving up just one hit.
The Bears plated runs in the opening two innings with a sacrifice fly in the first and a rare infield base hit that scored catcher Matt Menard who came around to score from second base on the play.
Tech had numerous opportunities while leaving 12 runners on base – five in scoring position – with five base hits and eight batters reaching base via base-on-balls.
Barrios led the way for Tech at the plate going 2-for-4 with the team’s only RBI. Freshman right fielder Stephen Smith posted Tech’s only extra-base hit with a double off the left-field wall in the third inning. Senior designated hitter Adam Kirsch went 0-for-3 with a walk, extending his reaching base safely streak to 18 games.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. In addition, freshman Anthony Lyons recorded his second pinch-hit base hit of the season while starting the Tech ninth with a single through the right side.
The Red Raiders and Bears will play game three of the Big 12 opening series on Sunday, Mar. 16 with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch from Baylor Ballpark. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
