LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman infielder Ryan Long (Crandall, Texas) has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Long is the seventh Red Raider to receive the honor – while becoming just the second Tech freshman position player (Andre Wheeler – 2011) to receive the recognition.
He batted .500 (6-for-12) with three consecutive multi-hit games to lead the Red Raiders to a three-game series sweep over Oral Roberts.
He posted two hits in all three games of the series while capping off the weekend with a pair of RBI and also driving in Tech’s first and last runs of its 4-1 series finale win over ORU. Long went 2-for-4 in the series opener, 2-for-5 in the middle game with an RBI and went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the final game of the series. Long tallied a .500 on-base percentage over the three games.
On the season, Long is second on the team batting .364 (8-for-22) with a double and four RBI.
