LUBBOCK, Texas – For the second consecutive week, the Texas Tech baseball program has had the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week while redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Chris Sadberry (Holliday, Texas) was selected Monday, the league office announced this afternoon.
Last week Tech freshman shortstop Ryan Long was named the league’s top newcomer following a three-game series sweep over Oral Roberts. Sadberry becomes the eighth Red Raider to receive the award.
Also receiving top honors from the league are Kansas State infielder Ross Kivett (Player of the Week) and Texas’ left-handed pitcher Dillon Peters (Pitcher of the Week).
Sadberry not only guided the Red Raiders to their lone victory of the Houston College Classic – but also to their first victory over the Rice Owls since 1996. Sadberry pitched seven innings against No. 10 Rice without allowing an earned run with five hits allowed and no walks with two strikeouts.
He was named to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team, while becoming the first Tech left-handed pitcher to ever be named to the all-tourney team and is the first Red Raider pitcher to earn the honor since 2004. In fact, Sadberry is the first Tech newcomer to earn a win at the Houston College Classic since current Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Nathan Karns in 2008.
Sadberry retired seven straight batters from the fourth to sixth inning while also retiring 16 of the first 19 batters he faced (1st to 6th inning). In addition, he retired Rice’s leadoff batter in six of seven innings pitched.
Sadberry is 2-0 this season in three starts with a 1.76 ERA with 15.1 innings pitched, just three earned runs allowed, seven strikeouts and has not allowed a walk.
