An 18-wheeler lost control driving eastbound along I-20 at Ranger Hill Thursday evening and crashed into the newly installed barrier, coming to rest in the passing lane of eastbound I-20. There were no deaths or serious injuries in this single vehicle accident.
“We’re relieved that no one was seriously hurt or worse after this accident Thursday evening,” said Elias Rmeili, TxDOT’s Brownwood District Engineer. “The safety barrier worked just as it was designed and proved to be priceless in this case. We encourage motorists to slow down and drive to conditions. It is so important to Be Safe and Drive Smart.”
The 54 inch barrier, which was installed in early July, divides the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-20. It stopped the truck completely and prevented it from driving into the westbound lanes. Instead the truck only leaned on the traffic barrier.
Traffic was closed in the passing lane of eastbound I-20 while the scene was cleared. Because the truck was leaning on the barrier, it did impede traffic on west bound I-20 for some time as well.
Fire crews on the scene said the barrier wasn’t damaged after the accident.
