Smyer Kindergartner Left Alone At Lubbock Park

What started out as a field trip to Lubbock ended in one Smyer kindergartner being left behind for over an hour. KLBK'S Brittany Escobar reports.
"We did leave one student behind," admitted Smyer Elementary principal, Jeff Brazil.

He said the kindergarten class was on their end of the year field trip here in Lubbock.

"A mistake was made and we just want to make sure that doesn't happen again," said Brazil.

People in a nearby office building said they saw a little boy wandering around Maxey Park, fixing to cross the street when he said he didn't know where he was.

"Number one we want the kids to be safe," said Brazil, "and you want to provide that environment for them."

Four adults, a teacher, bus driver, student teacher, and parent, were in charge of the kindergarten class as they came to watch a play and enjoyed lunch at the park.

"They counted them before they got on the bus," said Brazil which he said was the flaw.

Thinking every five and six year old was in their seat and accounted for the class headed back to Smyer.

"We did not realize we had one missing until the teacher unloaded the bus," said Brazil.

He said they immediately sent a teacher back to Lubbock and contacted the young boy's parents.

"The parent was very understanding yet concerned as any parent would be," he said.

"It all ended well and that's a great thing," said Brazil, "you just don't want to dwell on what could have happened and you just want to make sure this doesn't happen again."

Smyer Elementary has already started working on new procedures to make sure this doesn't happen again.

"This makes us look at those things and makes us do a better job at what we do," said Brazil.
