LUBBOCK, TX -- Texas Tech University dismissed Texas Tech football recruit Nigel Bethel II on Sunday after reports that he hit a Lady Raider basketball player. Amber Battle was hospitalized Sunday after an incident Saturday night. Texas Tech issued the following statement:

“Nigel Bethel II, a Texas Tech football student-athlete, has been dismissed from the team due to his role in an incident at the Texas Tech Student Recreation Center on Saturday, June 28. Texas Tech Athletics has a zero tolerance policy on this type of behavior.”

KAMC News has learned that Battle was punched by Bethel II during a basketball game on Saturday. A source said she will be evaluated on Monday and will have surgery as soon as possible.

Texas Tech students are shocked that something like this would happen on their campus.

"I still respect Texas Tech, don't get me wrong because it's one guy," freshman Erin Collins said. "But I don't approve of him and I am glad he is dismissed. I would not want him on my football team representing my college."
