STILLWATER, Okla. – Sophomore first baseman Eric Gutierrez hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season, but it wasn’t enough as No. 25 Texas Tech dropped its Big 12 series opener at No. 20 Oklahoma State, 3-1, on Friday evening at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Texas Tech (23-10, 4-6 Big 12) dropped its fourth straight Big 12 series opener while Oklahoma State (21-9, 4-3 Big 12) improved to 13-6 at home this season.
Tech starting pitcher Matt Withrow (3-3) took the loss allowing a run on two hits and two walks with a strikeout in an inning of work.
OSU starter Jon Perrin (3-2) notched his third win of the season pitching six innings allowing just one run and scattering five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Cowboys reliever Brendan McCurry pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season.
OSU scored a run in both the second and third inning – its first coming on a balk by Withrow, and its second on an RBI double to right center field from right fielder Conor Costello.
The Red Raiders cut the Cowboys’ lead to a run in the fifth when Gutierrez homered in back-to-back games for the second time this season – fifth time during career – for a solo homer over the left-field wall. Tech had two additional base runners in the fifth, but had runners stranded at the corners to end the inning.
Perrin and three Cowboy relievers went on to retire 14 of the final 15 Red Raiders that came to the plate, with the only Tech player reaching collecting a hit-by-pitch (Tyler Floyd) off left-handed freshman reliever Garrett Williams, who was then removed for McCurry.
OSU added an insurance run in the fifth inning on center fielder Saulyer Saxon’s RBI double down the left-field line.
Tech had five base hits in the game, led by sophomore left fielder Tyler Neslony who went 2-for-3.
The Red Raiders used two relievers in the contest with left-handed pitcher Cameron Smith (3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) and right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno (3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) both making an appearance.
The Red Raiders and Cowboys will continue their three-game Big 12 series on Saturday, Apr. 5, with game two of the series scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
