Tech's Defensive Backfield Could Alleviate Front Seven Concerns

Heading into fall camp, the Red Raiders will try to replace most of their front seven.
Heading into fall camp, the Red Raiders will try to replace most of their front seven.

However, the defensive backfield should be an area of strength for the defense with returners such like Justis Nelson and Keenon Ward who got a significant amount of playing time last season as freshman and should get some help from a healthy J.J. Gaines who is coming off a shoulder injury a year ago.

Texas Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury hopes they can help the team turn what was a weakness at times last year to a possible strength in 2014.

"Yea, it's a crew you know, you get two safeties back that have played there with Keenon and J.J. starting off there," said Kingsbury. "We've got some young guys coming in, and Justis Nelson at one corner who gained a lot of confidence those last five ballgames. Then we've got one corner thats up for grabs, so, I'm excited to see which young guy comes out on top there."
