Texas Tech Soccer's Battle in Goal Begins

Sophomore Lauren Watson enters practice as the favorite to follow in the footsteps of Victoria Esson.
Texas Tech heads into the 2014 season without a key part of last year's NCAA Tournament team.

The Red Raiders lost goalkeeper Victoria Esson to graduation.  Esson had 15.2 shutouts and 63 saves in her senior season and helped Texas Tech finish second nationally in shutout percentage and third for goals-against average.

Texas Tech enters the preseason with three goalkeepers on the roster including sophomore Lauren Watson, who played in two games last season.

"it's certainly her position to lose and I think the freshmen know that," head coach Tom Stone said. "What I like about Lauren is she doesn't want to leave anything to chance.  Watching her today she's doing to those freshman a little bit of what Victoria did to her."

Watson is joined in goal by Carissa Christensen (Alta Loma, California) and Marissa Torres (Amariloo/Tascosa).
