LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head volleyball coach Don Flora announced Monday the program’s 2014 schedule which includes a pair of home tournaments and 14 total matches at United Supermarkets Arena.
The 14 home matches are the most for the Red Raiders since 2001 when Tech hosted 16 en route to earning its most recent bid into the NCAA Championship.
“Our staff and players are eagerly looking forward to the 2014 season,” said Flora, who enters his fourth season on the Tech bench. “We have a number of quality opportunities in the non-conference schedule to prepare for the rigors of the Big 12 Conference schedule. The conference will be as strong as ever and it is our time to be prepared to compete at a high level throughout the Big 12.”
The Red Raiders open the season with back-to-back weekends on the road, traveling to Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 29-30 and then Texas-Pan American on Sept. 5-6. It is the first time Tech has begun a season with at least six consecutive road or neutral site contests since 2010.
Tech fans can catch their first glimpse of the Red Raiders on Sept. 12-13 with the Texas Tech Invitational. The Red Raiders will host Gardner Webb, Incarnate Word and Texas State during the two-day tournament that opens an eight-match homestand at United Supermarkets Arena.
The annual Lone Star Showdown will take place the following weekend with Abilene Christian, Air Force and Weber State all making the trip to Lubbock to play Sept. 19-20. This is the tournament’s third year of existence as Tech is 4-2 all-time in the event.
“We are looking forward to our fans and the local community having two weekends in September to see the Red Raiders compete,” Flora said. “This will be an important few weeks for our teams as we get ready to head into Big 12 play.”
The Red Raiders continue their homestand with the start of Big 12 play on Sept. 24 with TCU and Sept. 27 against West Virginia. The TCU match marks the fourth time in the last five seasons where Tech has opened conference action at home.
Tech will return to the road for three of its next four matches following the homestand, beginning Oct. 1 at Baylor and continuing Oct. 9 at Texas and Oct. 15 at Oklahoma. The only home match during that stretch is Oct. 4 against Kansas State.
Iowa State will travel to Lubbock on Oct. 18 before the Red Raiders take a break from Big 12 play to host Zheijiang in an Oct. 21 exhibition match. Zheijiang, one of the top professional teams out of China, will be making a tour of the state of Texas with exhibition matches also against Texas and TCU that week.
The Red Raiders will play three of their next five matches at home from there, hosting Baylor (Oct. 29), Texas (Nov. 5) and Kansas (Nov. 8) before closing the regular season with three of their final four matches on the road.
Tech closes its home slate Nov. 22 against Oklahoma on what will be Senior Day at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders conclude the regular season the following Wednesday (Nov. 26) at Iowa State.
Flora returns possibly his most veteran roster of his tenure in 2014 as the Red Raiders will be boosted by a five-player senior class that includes starters Rachel Brummitt, Breeann David and MIkia Mills.
