LUBBOCK, TX-Nothing can stop Chancellor Kent Hance from bragging about his Red Raiders this week.

“They have worked hard, and they have made us proud,” Hance said.

Three former Red Raiders are playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Wide Receiver Wes Welker and offensive linemen Manny Ramirez and Louis Vasquez are all starters for the Denver Broncos.

So Tech wanted to do something special.

Like take out a billboard in the middle of Times Square.

“The billboard is to say we are proud of the Texas Tech Red Raiders,’’ Hance said. “The billboard is nothing more than a congratulations to the three Red Raiders that will be starting for the Denver Broncos.”

Wes Welker returned the love to his alma mater Tuesday during media day.

“If you want to go to the Super Bowl then you better go to Texas Tech,” Welker said.

“We loved it,” Hance said. “And were trying to get him more publicity. We’re proud of him, and the social media on this has just taken off.”

Hance said the pictures, interviews and posts have been great publicity for Texas Tech.

But nothing compares to the exposure the school will get during the game with an audience of more than 100 million people around the world.

“I think one of the most exciting things [is] when they announce the starting line ups and the players get to say where they are from well have three out of 11 that will say Texas Tech, and so that is big for us,” Hance said.

“It’s a tremendous time right now because recruiting is just a week away,” Blayne Beal said. “National signing day is on February the 5th, so this is a crucial time for our football program.”

Director of Athletic Communications Blayne Beal said this attention could not have come at a better time.

“It’s real exciting and we are certainly pulling for the Broncos this weekend,” Beal said.

And now, a city that bleeds red and black will get a little dose of orange.

“I’m going for the Denver Broncos,” Hance said. “Anyone that’s got three Red Raiders they are going to win.”
