Updated: Two Dead in Floyd County Wreck

DPS released updated information about a deadly wreck Tuesday evening in Floyd County.
FLOYD COUNTY, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety late Wednesday morning released names and other details concerning a deadly crash Tuesday night in Floyd County.  DPS said two pickup trucks and a jeep crashed nine miles south of Floydada on State Highway 207.

DPS said Hunter Schwertner, 19, of Floydada and George Wilke, 60, of Post died in the crash and Robert Wilke, 48, of post suffered critical injuries.  DPS also said Nancy Cooper, 49, of Matador suffered serious injuries.

DPS said Schwertner was a driving a pickup behind Cooper’s pickup and they were both going north.  DPS said Schwertner’s pickup was going faster and it “struck the back of” Cooper’s truck.  Cooper’s truck then crashed in a field, and Schwertner’s pickup crossed over into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into George Wilke’s Jeep.

An official statement from DPS did not say if the drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts.  That same statement did not say if alcohol or speeding might have been factors.   DPS said the investigation is still continuing.

*Note: The original spelling of the 19-year-old driver's name in the official DPS summary was Schwerther. DPS has since updated the spelling to Schwertner.
