West Texas Battles Fire Danger

High temperatures, high winds and low humidity puts West Texas at a greater risk of fire danger.

LUBBOCK,TX- West Texans are keeping an eye out for wildfires. 

A combination of high winds, temperatures and a lack of humidity create a dangerous combination for wildfires.

Currently Lubbock and Hale counties are the only surrounding counties that are not in a fire ban.

County Commissioner Mark Heinrich said conditions are close to a burn ban but not there yet. 

He and the Lubbock Fire Department are urging citizens to use caution.

Captain Nick Wilson with LFD said to keep your cigarette buds in an ashtray and off the ground.

And an open flame should only be used while grilling.

Wilson said a common misconception is that wildfire can only occur in an open field, when in fact he said in these conditions he has seen a fire take out a whole neighborhood block.

Another tip for keeping your home safe, is to clear it of any debris and shrubbery; things that are highly combustible.
