Wish Wednesday: Anaiah

Sometimes it's something as small as a birthday party that makes the biggest difference.

(LUBBOCK, TX) - Sometimes it's something as small as a birthday party that makes the biggest difference.

"A little bit overwhelming that somebody would go out of their way to do something for a child like that," Jose Vargas said.

For 3-year-old Anaiah, opening presents, and a surprise visit from Elmo, was her one true wish.

Anaiah's undergone several surgeries in her short life.

She was born without her intestines connected to her stomach.

"It hasn't been easy, medically, we've been through a lot, but we've had a lot of great medical help," Anaiah's dad, Jose Vargas, said.

"Something so small is making her life so complete and just a happy moment in a time of all the sadness and doctor's visits," Ashby Wieligman said.

Wieligman is a Chi Omega at Texas Tech.

For her, and her sorority sisters, it wasn't what they wrapped inside the presents, but what was on the outside of Anaiah's face that mattered most.

"We work personally with Make-A-Wish. It's not just girls who say, 'that's our philanthropy' and I think it means a lot to them personally to be able to meet the kids and be involved and I think they get so much out of it," she said.

The Chi Omega's at Tech raised enough money to grant Anaiah's wish, using money raised during two annual fundraising events.

"Very grateful that a community would reach out, college students in general and just the foundation itself. It's a blessing," Vargas said.

"All she wanted was a birthday party. To us, that's so insignificant and so small and this is changing her life and it's something she'll remember forever," Wieligman added.
