LUBBOCK- Corporal John Gonzales with DPS isn't discouraging anyone from having a good time Tuesday night.
"We're there for a purpose. And our purpose is that if we're at high visibility hopefully we'll be a deterrent."
He is encouraging smart decisions.
"If they do decide to drink and not to drive to do some alternatives and be responsible for their actions."
Because, Gonzales said, those actions could have dire consequences.
"Not just the driving part of it. If you're involved in a collision it could injure you or it could injure someone else, or kill you or kill someone else."
Gonzales said to get a designated driver, call a friend, or call a taxi.
"Here at Checker cab, we plan on having our complete crew out to ensure the safety of our passengers."
Tish Weatherford with Checker Cab said they'll be swamped with calls Tuesday night.
"Just keep in mind that because of the high call volume on New Years Eve, it does tend to take a little longer," said Weatherford.
Weatherford said their response times are between 20 to 45 minutes but well worth the wait.
"We're here to keep the public safe and we'd like for you guys to do the same by calling us."
Citibus will not be running late hours.
