LUBBOCK, TX -- The Eddy County Sheriff's Office in New Mexico identified a body found Friday as a woman reported missing from Seminole.
According to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, a hunter was out Friday morning and found the body of 24 year old Anna L. Villegas. They said she was found naked and bound in the Pecos River, about 10 miles south of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Her body was then transported for an autopsy, which was finalized on December 1st. Medical Investigators determined she had died from asphyxiation.
The Eddy County Sheriff's department, the FBI, as well as an investigator from Hobbs are all working on the case, as well as people from the Gaines County Sheriff's Office. They are helping out because, according to Captain Jeff Zuniga with the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, she had been reported missing to Gaines County sometime around November 22nd.
Captain Zuniga said it is still early in their investigation of this case, which they are treating as a homicide, and there are a lot of unanswered questions, including why she was in New Mexico. "To our specific area, we haven't been able to locate anything that would lead us to believe she was here for a specific reason. That's why our investigators are in Gaines County and Lea County," Captain Zuniga said.
They are asking anyone with information to call the Eddy County Crime Stoppers line at 575-887-1888 and you can remain anonymous. You can also call the sheriff's office at 575-887-7551.
