LUBBOCK, TX -- Lubbock will soon spend up to $6.5 million to continue the reconstruction of 34th Street. The next phase will be 34th from Indiana Avenue to Quaker Avenue. The first stretch of the project was 34th from Avenue Q. to Indiana Avenue. The eventual goal, if funding can be found, is rebuild both the roadway and the sidewalks all the way west to Slide Road.
As for this next phase, bids from companies that wish to do the work are due on December 17. The City Council is scheduled to choose a contractor on January 9, 2014. Once the city gives final approval the contractor will have 345 days to complete the project.
Public records say, “34th Street is over 50 years old and needs to be reconstructed.” Voters agreed and approved just less than $21 million for 34th Street in a November 2009 bond election.
