LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior defender Hayley Haagsma was selected 15th overall today by Sky Blue FC in the National Women’s Soccer League College Draft held in Philadelphia.
An organization familiar with Red Raider talent, Sky Blue FC selected Haagsma with the club’s second round pick and will add her to a roster featuring former Red Raider midfielder Taylor Lytle.
Haagsma was the first of two Big 12 players selected in the NWSL College Draft.
“I see a lot of upside in her. She is a quality defensive player.” Sky Blue head coach and technical director Jim Gabarra said. “Her trajectory is very good. We were fortunate to pick her before someone else did.”
One of the top defenders in school history, Haagsma helped guide the Red Raider soccer team to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament and capped her career off with All-Big 12 honors last season. During her senior campaign, Tech set a school record with 18 wins while advancing to the second round of the NCAA postseason play.
"We are extremely proud of Hayley," Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "She was a tremendous asset to our program both as an outstanding player and a model student-athlete.”
Haagsma scored four goals as a center-back for the Red Raiders in 2013 while appearing in 18 matches with 15 starts. She was also honored as an Academic All-American for her success in the classroom.
