LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Red Raiders James Wilson has returned to his alma mater to serve as men’s assistant tennis coach, announced Texas Tech head coach Tim Siegel.
Wilson comes to Texas Tech after serving as the men’s assistant at UNLV last season.
“We are very excited to welcome back one of our own, especially someone like James,” said Siegel. “He brings so many things to the table, but more importantly, he knows what Texas Tech Tennis is about. He has been a part of the journey, a part of the success and a part of the one of the most successful eras in the program’s history.
“I always felt when James played for me it was like having another coach on the court. He went from transfer to team captain to volunteer assistant to now assistant. He is someone who is truly a Red Raider.”
Wilson, a 2009 graduate of Texas Tech, played for three seasons under Siegel and served as team captain as a junior and senior in 2008 and 2009. Wilson led the Red Raiders to three straight NCAA appearances during his three seasons as a Red Raider and saw Texas Tech climb into the Top 25 each season. Texas Tech was 47-28 with Wilson on the squad.
“It is a dream come true to be back at Texas Tech,” said Wilson. “I have so many fond memories of my time here and I am incredibly humbled to be able to help lead this team. Working alongside my mentor and former coach is a pleasure and one of the greatest aspects of this opportunity. I cannot wait to get started.”
In Wilson’s one season at UNLV, he helped lead the Rebels to a 17-7 record and a 4-2 record in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV finished ranked sixth in the ITA Mountain Region. It was a 10-match improvement for the Rebels who were 7-16 in 2012.
Prior to UNLV, Wilson served as an assistant for one season at the College of William & Mary women’s program.
Wilson began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with both the men’s and women’s programs at Texas Tech in 2010-11. He coached during practice, tournaments and dual matches, while assisting with mental training techniques.
Following graduation from Texas Tech, Wilson played on the USTA Pro Circuit competing in Futures Tournaments. He also spent time as a tennis instructor at the Dominion Country Club and The Falls Tennis and Fit Club. During his collegiate career, Wilson was an instructor for the Future Stars Tennis Camp and at the Dominion Country Club. He is currently a USPTA Certified Professional 2.
Wilson earned his degree in psychology from Texas Tech in 2009 and worked towards his master’s degree in exercise and sports psychology, while serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Red Raider tennis programs. He was a member of the President's honor list, the National Scholastic Honor Society, Big 12 Honor Roll and the Commissioner's Honor Roll during his collegiate career.
