Kieschnick Has Memorable Mlb Debut As A Giant

Kieschnick singled during his first two major league at-bats helping lead Giants to 9-2 victory
LUBBOCK, Texas – Being nervous certainly wasn’t an issue for former Texas Tech outfielder Roger Kieschnick (Rockwall, Texas) who singled during his first two major league at-bats with a pair of RBI on Wednesday while making his Major League Baseball debut as a member of the San Francisco Giants. San Francisco defeated the Phillies 9-2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia Wednesday evening.

Kieschnick (2006-08), who at age 26, becomes the 26th Red Raider to make their MLB debut and is just the second Texas Tech player ever (Josh Bard, 2002) to record a multi-hit game during his debut as he finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI. Kieschnick is the first Red Raider to collect a base hit during his first career at-bat since 2005 (Joe Dillon).

Batting seventh and playing left field, Kieschnick also made several impressive plays defensively. In addition, his two RBI made him the first Giants player to record multiple RBI in an MLB debut since 2008 (John Bowker).

Kieschnick is the third Texas Tech player to make his MLB debut this year – matching the most in school history as 2002 three Red Raiders also made MLB debuts (Trey Lunsford, Josh Bard, Travis Driskill).

Kieschnick is the fifth Red Raider to make an MLB debut during the last two years and is the 10th to play in the show since 2006.

Kieschnick was a three-time All-Big 12 selection, 2006 Freshman All-American, Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year, two-time Academic All-Big 12 pick and two-time ABCA All-Region selection during his three-year career at Texas Tech. He also played two summers during his collegiate career for the USA Baseball National Team.

He played in 168 games (168 starts) in three seasons at Tech with a .322 (222-for-689) career batting average with 151 runs, 54 doubles, 10 triples, 39 home runs, 156 RBI and was 23-of-33 stolen bases.

His final season in 2008 as a Red Raider he batted .305 with 15 doubles, 17 home runs, 65 RBI and tallied eight stolen bases. He remains one of only two players in school history (Wes Shook, 1991-92) to lead the team in triples and home runs in back-to-back seasons.

Kieschnick is the second Red Raider from the 2008 MLB Draft class to make it to the big leagues as teammate Zach Stewart made his debut with the Blue Jays in 2012. Kieschnick is now the fifth player off the 2006 Texas Tech team to make it to the big leagues, joining Dustin Richardson, Josh Tomlin, AJ Ramos and Colt Hynes.

NOTES:
- Texas Tech has at least one player from four consecutive MLB draft classes that have reached the big leagues (2006-2009), including a pair of draftees from 2006
Josh Tomlin, Dustin Richardson) and also two from 2008 Roger Kieschnick, Zach Stewart).

- Kieschnick is just the second Red Raider outfielder to make an MLB debut, and is the first since 1991 when Donald Harris was called up by the Rangers. Harris is the highest drafted Red Raider of all-time going fifth overall in the first round in 1989.

- Kieschnick is the first Red Raider to make an MLB debut with the Giants since catcher Trey Lunsford on Sept. 12, 2002 against the Padres... Lunsford was first drafted out of Grayson County College in 1998 while playing for Tim Tadlock, current head coach of the Red Raiders.. Lunsford's first career at-bat was a single to left field against Trevor Hoffman.
