LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Kennedy Kithuka was honored by the Big 12 Conference Tuesday as the Runner of the Week after finishing first overall at the NCAA Pre-National meet Saturday in Indiana.
Kithuka has now been tabbed the conference Runner of the Week four times this season and seven times in his career. The Thika, Kenya native was tabbed Monday as the Men’s Division I Runner of the Week by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association – his second National Athlete of the Week recognition by the organization.
The Thika, Kenya native and reigning NCAA Cross Country Champion ran away from the field at the NCAA Pre-National Meet finishing first overall by more than 30 seconds and claiming his fifth straight victory of the season. Kithuka has now won 12-straight races dating back to his 2012 debut and finished Saturday’s meet with a season-best time of 22:52 in the 8,000-meter race.
Kithuka and the Texas Tech cross country program now look towards the Big 12 Championship meet scheduled for Nov. 2 in Waco, Texas.
