TUCSON, Ariz. — Texas Tech redshirt freshman Minta Spears scored 14 points and junior Amber Battle added 12 – all in the second half – but Tech’s late comeback bid fell just short as Arizona won, 65-56, at McKale Memorial Center on Sunday.
Battle finished in double figures for the seventh time this season. Junior Audrisa Harrison scored six points and a career-high nine rebounds while sophomore Kellyn Schneider finished with a career-high nine points.
Tech (4-4) was forced to play without Battle in the final 18 minutes of the first half after she drew two quick fouls. Spears hit her first three, 3-pointers to cap a 14-3 run and give Tech an 18-9 lead with 12:18 left. Then the Wildcats answered back with an 18-2 run as Tech’s shooting went quiet over the next 10 minutes and Arizona eventually took a 30-24 lead at the break.
Spears ended the day with a career-high four made 3-pointers and played all 40 minutes.
Arizona (2-7) would take as much as a 12-point lead with 17:22 to go before Tech chipped away at the lead and made a 10-4 run of its own. Battle instantly made an impact, scoring six of Tech’s first 15 points in the second half.
The Lady Raiders cut the lead to seven points at 47-40 and then used a quick 9-2 run to cut the lead back to two points with 6:51 to go. But Tech couldn’t close the gap as Arizona hit five of its final six free throws in the midst of a 7-0 run to close the game.
Tech returns home to finish out the non-conference schedule and host the World Vision Invitational, Dec. 20-22 at United Spirit Arena.
