LUBBOCK, Texas — Minta Spears hit six 3-pointers and scored 20 points while Amber Battle tallied a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to give Texas Tech a 73-51 win over Angelo State on Monday night at United Spirit Arena.

Angelo State took a three-point lead out of halftime but then only hit five shots from the field the rest of the way as the Lady Raiders held the Belles to 26.9 percent shooting in the second half and closed out the game with a 17-2 run.

“I’m proud that we played better in the second half,” said Tech head coach Candi Whitaker, who coached her first game as the team’s head coach. “Saw some good things. We’ve got to get better in a lot of areas. We saw those and we know that and we’ll continue to work on it.”

The Lady Raiders jumped out to an 8-2 lead after Battle and Spears each hit their first 3-pointers of the night but then went back and forth with the Belles with five ties the remainder of the half.

Battle then turned up her offense to score 12 of her 17 points and grab 10 of 12 rebounds in the second half.

“It was just my mind set, you know, going out, being aggressive and being smart with my fouls,” Battle said. “My teammates found me and when they did I just shot the ball.”

Four new Lady Raiders dawned the scarlet and black for the first time including Marina Lizarazu who finished with nine points and seven assists. Junior transfer Audrisa Harrison ended the night with eight points and nine rebounds while freshman Diamond Lockhart scored eight.

Spears and fellow redshirt-freshman Ivonne CookTaylor played their first games since injuring their knees last season. Spears not only hit shots from outside the arc but also found open players and was able to help create turnovers. She finished with six assists and four steals to add to her 20 points.

“There’s been a lot of preparation going into this game but for me its been this whole past year,” she said. “The last time I got to play was this game last year. So I’ve just been working really hard and trying to prepare the same way for each game.”

Spears and the rest of the Lady Raiders will now begin preparing for their regular season opener against Texas-Pan American at 4 p.m., Sunday at United Spirit Arena.
