More than 40 years later, he's one of the most celebrated mascots in America, as the defending Capital One Mascot of the Year.

But before Gaspard could jump into the costume for the first time, cartoonist Dirk West made Raider Red jump off the pages of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

With the help of Dirk's son, Tom, and local cartoonist, Kent Gamble, we look back at the beginnings of Raider Red in this week's McGavock Nissan's Legends of the Game.
