Lubbock Soldier Gets New Home

The third recipient of the Lubbock Home for Heroes gets the keys to his home Thursday.

It was Sergeant Shawn Walton’s dream to join the military.

A drean he lived out until 2007 when he stepped on an I.E.D.

“We are blessed, beyond blessed to even have him still with us,” his wife Kristin said.

After 17 surgeries Walton’s life is getting back to normal.

Now he and his wife Kristin have a new dream.

“Seeing my oldest daughter just light up and then break down and cry because she has her very own princess room,” Shawn Walton said. “I’ve always wanted something for her like that and now she has it.”

Thursdays the Walton’s received the keys to their new south Lubbock home as part of the Lubbock Home for Heroes.

“It’s the home of our dreams,” Shawn Walton said. “It’s anything and everything we’ve ever wanted or could have asked for.”

“I don’t even think it has sunk in yet,” Kristin Walton said. “This is a huge blessing, they did such a good job. It is unbelievable.”

The home was built thanks to several members of the West Texas Home Builders Association.

“Putting them in a great community, great subdivision, with quality schools, with great neighbors,” Charlie Hamilton with Lubbock Land Company said. “We’re just glad we could play a real small part in that.”

“I have been amazed at the way not only the home builders have come together to do this but the way that the community has,” Larry Driskill with WTHBA said. “It’s been an emotional gratifying thing.”

And the Walton’s will get to live in their new home mortgage free.

“It’s made the experience so much richer that people come together and actually put in there time and volunteered and made this all happen,” Kristin Walton said. “It just shows what kind of a community we have.”
