On Thursday, we talked about Baker Mayfield and his reasons for transferring from Texas Tech. He said he planned to transfer to Oklahoma and play right away but today Texas Tech said not so fast my friend.

Even though Mayfield was not on scholarship with Texas Tech he was held to NCAA transfer rules, and Texas Tech initially blocked a transfer to any Big 12 school. Mayfield appealed to a five member, Texas Tech, panel to be able to transfer and be eligible to play right away at OU and today the NCAA denied his appeal. Now he will have to sit out a season and lose a year of eligibility. Mayfield said in his interview that if he was denied he would probably look at other schools.

Below is a statement released by Texas Tech:

“On Friday, Jan. 10, a panel of Texas Tech’s Athletics Council heard Baker Mayfield’s appeal concerning the denial of permission to contact and the one-time transfer exception with regard to the University of Oklahoma. The five-member panel unanimously upheld the head coach’s decision and denied Baker’s appeal. The decision was consistent with Texas Tech policy regarding intra-conference transfers and consistent with NCAA rules.”
