LUBBOCK, TX – Generation Healthcare provided more details on Thursday concerning the takeover of Lubbock’s only abortion clinic.  Generation will offer women’s healthcare such as pap smears and contraception.  However, Generation will not offer abortions.

Generation said, “Effective October 30, 2013, all Planned Parenthood Association of Lubbock board members resigned.”

Generation took over Planned Parenthood’s Briercroft clinic as of October 30.  The acquisition of the abortion clinic at 67th & Indiana is nearly complete.

“Planned Parenthood Women’s Center ceases to exist as of November 9, 2013,” Generation said.

But that’s not the end of the story.

“Generation Covenant was required to assume approximately $250,000 of Planned Parenthood debt secured by the [67th Street] facility,” Generation said.   Add in the cost of renovations and the total comes to $400,000.

A board member for the anti-abortion Nurturing Center, Krysten Haga, was cautiously optimistic.

“While I generally don’t trust anything having to do with Planned Parenthood, we haven’t been given a reason not to trust what Generation is claiming,” Haga said. “Our prayers for abortion to end will continue and we are praying that Generation keeps their word regarding it.”

Generation released the following statement on Thursday:

Generation Healthcare, a Lubbock-based division of Generation Covenant, acquired two properties formerly owned by Planned Parenthood* to strengthen women’s healthcare across the South Plains by ensuring the availability and continuation of women’s health services in the area. According to Planned Parenthood of Lubbock, thirty to fifty women a week were being turned away because of its inability to accept the Texas Women’s Health Program.

Acquisition Details of Clinic Located at #14 Briercroft Office Park

In an effort to ensure no interruption in healthcare services provided at this clinic location, Generation Healthcare assumed ownership and operation of the Briercroft clinic, effective October 30, 2013. Also effective October 30, 2013, all Planned Parenthood Association of Lubbock board members resigned and the Generation Healthcare board assumed responsibility for the clinic.

Services Offered at Generation Healthcare Clinic (#14 Briercroft Office Park)

Although the clinic is undergoing renovation, the clinic is open and accepting patients three days a week for services that include breast/cervical cancer screening, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure screening, and birth control. The clinic is adding a counselor and will expand services to include pre-natal care. Within the next six months, it plans to extend operations to five days a week, with evening and select Saturday hours. In the near future, the clinic will accept most major insurance and Texas Women Health Coverage.

Acquisition Details of Facility Located at 3302 67th Street (67th St. & Indiana Ave.) In order to take possession of Planned Parenthood abortion clinic located at 67th and Indiana, Generation Covenant was required to assume approximately $250,000 of Planned Parenthood debt secured by the facility. Services provided at this location were suspended as of October 25, 2013. Under the terms of the acquisition, Planned Parenthood Women’s Center ceases to exist as of November 9, 2013.

Future Plans for Indiana & 67th St. Facility

Renovation is planned to transform this location into an educational facility for The Institute for Creative Learners (a division of Generation Covenant, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization). The Institute for Creative Learners is a cutting edge educational program combining art, technology, science and traditional Orton Gillingham multisensory teaching methods to maximize the potential of children with learning differences.  Studies suggest many of our children with learning differences are actually out-of-the box thinkers with untapped potential for success. This program provides children the opportunity to explore their unique creative gifts while developing stronger academic skills and greater self-esteem.

Generation Covenant intends to bring life, laughter, and learning to 67th street. However, to do so, it will need to raise approximately $400,000 to retire the building debt and renovate the building suitable for children. The needs include new roofing, windows, heating/cooling, wiring, plumbing, floor coverings, landscaping, and paint.
