LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith announced the 2013-14 men’s basketball schedule on Thursday.
The Red Raider slate features 17 home games and 13 opponents who appeared in the postseason last season. It marks the fifth time in the last six seasons that Texas Tech will host at least 17 home games.
Under the direction of Smith, who is in his first season at Texas Tech and 23rd overall, Texas Tech returns 11 letterwinners and four starters from last season.
The Red Raiders open the season with a pair of home games at the United Spirit Arena against Houston Baptist on Nov. 8 and Northern Arizona on No. 11. This is the fifth-ever meeting with Houston Baptist, with the Red Raiders leading the series, 4-0. Texas Tech is renewing an old rivalry with Northern Arizona. The Red Raiders are 33-5 all-time against the Lumberjacks, but have not played since 2005.
Texas Tech and Alabama kick off the Big 12/SEC Challenge in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 14. Alabama topped the Red Raiders, 66-62, in Lubbock last season. The Tide leads the all-time series, 6-1.
The Red Raiders then open play in the Legends Classic with a pair of games in Lubbock against Texas Southern (Nov. 18) on ESPNU and South Dakota State (Nov. 21), before heading to Brooklyn, N.Y., to face Pittsburgh in the Barclays Center on Nov. 25 on ESPN2. Texas Tech will then face either Stanford or Houston on Nov. 26.
The day after Thanksgiving Texas Tech will host UTSA at the United Spirit Arena (Nov. 29), before heading to Tucson to take on Arizona on Dec. 3. The Red Raiders are 4-1 against the Roadrunners, but the two have not met since 1999. Tech leads the series with Arizona, 28-22.
Texas Tech returns home to host Central Arkansas (Dec. 15) and LSU (Dec. 18) before heading back to the state of Arizona to face Arizona State in Tempe on Dec. 21. This is the first-ever meeting with UCA, while Tech and LSU will meet for the fifth time (Tech leads 3-1), but the first since 1960. Tech leads the series with Arizona State, 21-20.
The Red Raiders close out the non-conference schedule with Mount St. Mary’s on Dec. 30 at United Spirit Arena. This is the first-ever meeting between Mount St. Mary’s and Texas Tech.
Texas Tech opens Big 12 play against Iowa State on Jan. 4, marking the first time these two teams have opened the conference season against each other since 1998.
The Red Raiders host a pair of ESPNU home games against West Virginia (Jan. 6) and Baylor (Jan. 15) with a one-game road trip to Austin (Jan. 11) in between.
Then Tech hits the road for three of the next four, as they head to TCU (Jan. 18), West Virginia (Jan. 22), return home for Oklahoma (Jan. 25), before heading to Manhattan for a matchup with Kansas State (Jan. 28).
February features four home games against TCU (Feb. 1), Oklahoma State (Feb. 8), Kansas (Feb. 18) and Kansas State (Feb. 25) and three road games against Oklahoma (Feb. 12), Iowa State (Feb. 15) and Oklahoma State (22).
The Red Raiders close out the season with road games in March against Baylor (March 1) and Kansas (March 5) before returning home for Senior Day against Texas on March 8 to close out the regular season.
In all, the Red Raiders have eight games currently scheduled on the ESPN family of networks and 11 games on the Big 12 network. The rest of the TV schedule will be released at a later date.
