LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raider and Lady Raider cross country teams are set to compete Friday at the 2013 NCAA Mountain Regional meet in Ogden, Utah with ambitions of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
The meet begins with the men’s 10,000-meter run at 12 p.m. followed by the women’s 6,000-meter run at 1:15 p.m. Both races will be held at the Riverside Golf Course.
“It’s a great opportunity for another great performance.” Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said. “We had a good showing at conference, and will look to carry that over into the regional meet.”
The top two teams from each region earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Terra Haute, Ind. and the top four runners not associated with qualifying teams will advance as individuals. Additional teams and individuals are chosen through an at-large selection process.
The Red Raiders enter the meet led by senior and defending NCAA Champion Kennedy Kithuka. Kithuka, who won the 2012 NCAA Mountain Region meet by nearly 20 seconds, is unbeaten during his Texas Tech career and is eyeing his second NCAA Cross Country Crown in as many seasons.
Meanwhile, the Lady Raiders will also look to get a boost from junior Sharlene Nickle who finished 13th at the conference meet to earn All-Big 12 honors. Nickle has paced the Tech’s women’s squad in each of the last four meets.
“She’s done a good job of leading and is a steady leader,” Murray said.

The 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships are set for Nov. 23 in Terra Haute.
