LUBBOCK, Texas – The 2014 Texas Tech softball season officially opened Sunday afternoon with 23 Red Raiders taking part in the first practice held at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Red Raiders, who return nine letterwinners and three starters from their 2013 club, will have four weeks of preseason practices before opening the season Feb. 6 at the Lion Classic in Hammond, La.
“It was nice to have everyone back from the break and get back on the dirt,” Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. “We had great weather today and I thought our effort and focus was right where I hoped it would be. We have quite a bit of work to get done before the season begins but I thought today was a good starting point.”
The opening practice was the first for two Red Raiders as Camaury Prados-Washington and Kady Crow both joined the program at semester. The duo is two of 13 newcomers currently on the Tech roster.
The group of newcomers joins a list of returners that includes seniors Taylor Powell and Brittany Talley along with junior Cara Custer and sophomores Samantha Camello, Gretchen Aucoin and Sydnie Tapia.
The Red Raiders open the season Feb. 6 against host Southeastern Louisiana to start the Lion Classic. Tech will also face Akron, Nicholls State, Buffalo, UMKC and Texas Southern in the four-day, season-opening tournament.
The Feb. 6 opening day game marks the earliest Tech has begun its season since facing Central Florida and Wagner on the same date in 2009.
