LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team officially punched its second-straight ticket to the NCAA Tournament as the Red Raiders were selected as an at-large bid among the 64-team field announced Monday.
Texas Tech (17-2-2) will host Minnesota (11-7-2) Friday at 7 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex. It marks the second-straight year in which Texas Tech has hosted the first round of the NCAA Tournament as the John Walker Soccer Complex packed in the third-largest crowd nationally for an opening round match in 2012.
“It’s great,” Texas Tech head soccer coach Tom Stone said shortly after the announcement. “Last year we considered it an incredible opportunity for our home crowd. To be able to get it two years in a row says a lot about not only the season that our girls had but for what the NCAA knows we can put on here.”
Texas Tech went unbeaten in Big 12 play finishing second in the regular season conference standings before advancing to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship for the second-straight season. Five Red Raiders were selected to the postseason All-Big 12 Team, while Tech’s stifling defense has allowed just seven goals on the season and shutout 16 opponents.
The Red Raiders piled up a school record 16 regular season victories suffering just one loss and going unbeaten away from home.
The Red Raiders advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2012 before falling to No. 1 seed Florida State in double-overtime in Tallahassee, Fla.
